Watch the RFID Video
Filed in archive RFID Basics on May 26, 2006
Members of AIM Global, the industry organization, have sponsored and produced a six-minute educational video on RFID. The video spot has aired on public television in the United States. It is obviously designed as part of a consumer education outreach.
Go here to watch the RFID video online -- multiple formats are provided.
There is also a detailed companion article called, RFID: For the Common Good. Written by Dan Mullen, President of AIM Global, it puts RFID in perspective from a consumer viewpoint. He writes:"Suppose, 15 years ago, you had been told about a technology that could potentially erase (or copy) all the files from your computer, aid criminals in stealing your credit card and bank information, and even make you a party to unethical and illegal activities. And suppose a state legislature proposed banning that technology. Would you have supported the legislation?
Or suppose that you had been told that there was a new technology on the horizon that would claim one life every 13 minutes in the United States alone, damage the environment, and leave the country hostage to foreign interests. Would you have supported banning that technology?
Couched in those terms, many people would.
Yet if such legislation had been enacted, neither the Internet nor the automobile would be in use today.
Today, some people are trying to portray Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in much the same way. Many reports focus only on negative scenarios without providing an accurate perspective on how the technology works and how it is improving and protecting our quality of life."
It is quite an interesting -- not to mention balanced -- article. Most consumers who hear only distorted snippets about RFID technology usually have no clue how widespread the use of RFID is today and how much it is benefiting their lives already.
It is good to see AIM Global stepping up to be proactive about emphasizing the benefits of RFID.

In America there are several systems that are in place that allow you to make purchases with RFID: the Speedway Speedpass allows motorists to buy gasoline with RFID and the Discover "tap" (Americans love to tap) card allows you to purchase things with RFID anywhere an RFID reader is installed (most stores, supermarkets, restaurants).

RFID application is just beginning, there is a lot of other possibilities ie: including RFID reader on all new cell phone for a larger public, (reading for information directly from products) The 21st century will use every day RFID for comum people, but I believe the next step will be involving RFID and security. This is a RSS directory about RadioFrequency Identification they do have RFID Video http://www.radio-frequencyid.com/
