Wal-Mart Behind on RFID

Filed in archive Implementation by Anita Campbell on February 08, 2004

Top suppliers to Wal-Mart got a shock last year when they were told they would have to implement RFID on all shipments by January 2005.

But Wal-Mart is not even the retail leader when it comes to RFID. Tesco, the British retailer, is requiring RFID by April 2004. Metro Group, the huge German retailer, is requiring RFID by November 2004.

What's more, RFID is not even new. It's been around for years, and widely used in that bastion of bleeding-edge technology innovation -- Agriculturelinks. (Agriculture?) Yes, some 40 million farm animals are being tracked for issues such as Mad Cow disease using RFID.
