Sushi Bars Using RFID

Filed in archive Retail on March 24, 2004

Here's a neat new use of radio frequency making the rounds on the blogs: RFID tags on sushi plates.
"Engadget has a great post about a company in Japan using RFID tags in Sushi Bar plates. This enables wait staff to scan a stack of empty plates and send the check to the cash register. This is a great technology and it will change cafeteria style food service areas (hospitals, college dorms, corporate campuses, etc.) across the globe. Suddenly cafeterias become giant walk thru vending machines."

About 120 sushi bars in Tokyo are using the new system called "Oaiso" (meaning check), which uses RFID tag-embedded sushi plates to tally the bill.
