Strain Sensing System to keep an eye on changes in concrete structures
Filed in archive Implementation on November 9, 2007
With traffic increasing on roads and bridges and even natural factors causing strain on steel and concrete structures, this causes the load bearing capacity to decline over a period of time which is quite difficult to determine in normal circumstances. If left undetected it could turn out to be quite fateful and cause a lot of damage

Realizing the need for a system which could keep a tab on the deterioration taking place in these systems, Oki and Taiheiyo have come up with a system based on passive sensor integrated RFID called Strain Sensing System which keeps a tab on the changes and deformation resulting due to various types of deterioration and loading on the structure without requiring any source of power. The sensor integrated steel is embedded within the concrete and can measure strain resolution level of nearly 10X10-6. Along with a thermistor the system can even measure changes caused as a result of variations in temperatures.
This would certainly help in keeping a better watch on various concrete structures and avoid any mishappenings which could happen due to deterioration of these structures over a period of time.
