Implementation
by Anita Campbell on January 6, 2005
"Slap and Ship" RFID tagging -- just to meet retailer mandates -- will continue to prevail during 2005. This year is unlikely to be the big year of widespread RFID adoption. Nor will it be the year that companies substantially make-over their supply chains with the benefits of RFID.
This article at InformationWeek explains why. Gen 2 standards were just adopted late in 2004. Cost of tags, although dropping, is still too high for mass usage. And many companies are just starting to get their arms around RFID, and it will take time to sort through all the complexities and implement it.

The "slap and ship" approach may seem like the right thing to do in the short-term but I believe that if you are going to make the investment any way in adopting you might as well do it right so that not only does your customer's business benefits, but you also reinvent your own business. RFID is too dramatic a technology to be treated lightly.
