RFID-Enabled Time-Temperature Indicator can remotely communicate the health of perishable goods on board

Filed in archive Implementation on November 19, 2007

How about if you could get to know from the comforts of your office whether the perishable item you have shipped has spoilt or not? This will soon be a possibility as Chill-On which is a project backed by EU has come up with an Electronic component making it a possibility to connect time temperature indicators (TTI) to RFID transponders. So in the time to come it would be very much possible for you to supervise the shelf life of goods depending upon the temperature exposure during shipment.

Working with color forming, in case of TTI the proton transfer crystals get activated by UV radiation and based on exposure to temperatures it changes colors which helps in finding out whether the item was subjected to harsh temperatures or not. Electrical signal is used to keep a tab on the electrical signal and they are transferred to active RFID tags. This enables to count on the remaining shelf life of the goods depending upon the information gathered about the temperature. As of now researchers are working towards developing a technique which would make it possible to keep a constant watch on food being shipped. The only problem with respect to it is cost which if controlled could work towards making it a huge success. At the end of the day this would surely come to the rescue of the food industry and help them in minimizing their losses.
