RFID to Track Kids

Filed in archive RFID Basics by Anita Campbell on June 28, 2004

Legoland theme parks in denmarklinks have started to issue RFID bracelets to children. The bracelets track the children wherever they are in the park. Park officials can then direct parents to where their children may be.

The program, called the "Kidspotter," can save parents from headaches and unnecessary panic and worry.

It also will give Legoland officials valuable marketing data, according to a report by Will Sturgeon in Silicon.com. They will know exactly which parts of the park were visited, where the children spent the most time, and so on.

Obviously there will be privacy concerns over how the data is used.

However, let me ask all my readers a question: is this any different from customer loyalty cards used in grocery stores and other retail outlets? And what about credit card companies? The data they collect is far more revealing than whether little Johnny spent more time in one part of Legoland than another. Your thoughts?
