RFID to Measure Your Glucose Levels
Filed in archive Healthcare on October 30, 2006
Diabetes is regarded as a slow killer and with around 230 million people suffering from diabetes this is certainly a disease which requires attention. Some of my relatives are diabetic and I know how painful it is to check the sugar levels. The conventional finger prick method is quite painful and at times inaccurate too.
Realizing this Digital Angel had created syringe-implantable glucose-sensing RFID microchip for diabetic patients. The implantable bio sensor chip equipped with a glucose sensor, passive transponder and integrated circuitry enables anyone implanted with the microchip to painlessly scan it for determining their level of glucose concentration. The glucose data is accurately transmitted back by the RFID microchip to a wireless scanner which displays the level of the glucose. There is also no need for a battery as the RFID microchip is powered by a scanner signal. This is being regarded as a life changing technology for millions of diabetic patients around the world. The product has received a patent form the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and would be marketed by VeriChip.
One more thing, do you know that its application is possible beyond human beings too. You might not be aware that diabetes is also a serious issue in the case of animals too and this glucose sensing microchip could be successfully implemented in this regard also.
Hopefully it is expected to make life a bit simpler for the diabetes patients who everyday had to unwilling use the finger prick technique for measuring their glucose level accompanied with the fear of pricking everyday, pain and inaccurate results but thankfully RFID has altered the situation for good.
