Market Size
by Anita Campbell on February 9, 2004

The Yankee Group just released a report estimating that the RFID market opportunity will reach $4.2 Billion (USD) in 2008.
That $4.2 Billion will cover a variety of different types of technology and services, Line 56 reports:
That opportunity will be distributed across several domains, as RFID involves enterprise applications, middleware, physical infrastructure (e.g. tags and readers), and other IT categories.
Interestingly, IDC reported just a month ago its estimate of the market size, pegging it singificantly lower. IDC says the market will grow to $1.3 Billion (USD) in 2008.
Is this truly a discrepancy between two conflicting market research reports, or are they measuring apples and oranges?

You are absolutely right; the market size figures are rather confusing. I believe that it is indeed a case of comparing apples & oranges. Sometimes the details are in the small print, that may say in Arial type 6 font hidden at the bottom of the page -valid only for North American market or excluding the markets in south Asia and middle-east etc).
And what I would like to know is does any one hold any of these research organizations accountable?
In any case currently the links that you have provided for the Yankee Group & IDC lead to the site but not to the exact documents, I hope you could please check on the same.
I came across your blog while searching for an accurate forecast for the global market size for the sports timing market. In my earlier assignment as the director of a Tech Company in Dubai I had finalized a deal for a unique RFID sports application with the Government in UAE. Currently I am the Group CEO of another Tech Company in India and I am keen on perusing work in the RFID domain.
Why am I telling you all this, cause to raise money for my area of interest I need to provide some idea about my target market size? And here come the big question what is the market size for a RFID sports timing, what if I use active RFID, is that market different from the Passive RFID market. I believe that that I have opened a new area in the middle-east RFID market cause I had suggested a different approach to an initiated customer, so did that actually increase the market size? Who is the one to decide?
While I am aware that most established research Groups Like IDC & the Yankee group have their methodologies do they make real sense? This is question and not an accusation.
