RFID keeps NASCAR racing safe and secure
Filed in archive Implementation on May 21, 2010

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing or NASCAR in its Sprint Cup Series has been using RFID to check the chassis and fuel tanks of the car so that the chassis cannot be changed or tampered and each team of NASCAR have fuel cell with similar capacity of 17 gallons. This ensures that the regulations are complied with and safety of the cars is not compromised with as a changed fuel cell or chassis could lead to unfair advantage for other drivers and even push up the chances of an accident.
Jerry Kaproth, NASCAR's safety coordinator stated:
After three years of using the system to track chassis and fuel cells, the association is now looking into further opportunities to utilize the technology to improve safety and efficiency, as well as make the racing events fair.
NASCAR started looking for an RFID based solution in 2006 when it was in the process of developing its Car of Tomorrow. It wanted to ensure that there was no kind of tampering with the vehicle on which they were built. For this very reason NASCAR adopted RFID.
