RFID Guardian - The Anti-RFID Device Unveiled
Filed in archive Privacy and Security on July 30, 2006
This would certainly not be liked by the proponents of RFID. Researchers in Amsterdam have gone ahead and created a device which would prevent RFID tags from being read and this was being done with the aim of protecting users from this technology which was posing a threat to their privacy.
Called the RFID Guardian, it is a PDA size handheld device which warns a person that when a RFID scanner is trying to read a chip by beeping. This device runs on a 550MHz XScale 32 bit processor with 64Mbytes of RAM. The next few months would be spent by the research team on debugging and preparing the device for commercial use.
Can I see smiles on the face of those people who treat RFID as a threat to their privacy? This would certainly give a boost to all those who believe that technology should not be developed to such an extent that it starts affecting their lives.

To add to Chris, I see in US Patent 6,970,070 www.patentmonkey.com/PM/PatentID/6970070.aspx that RSA has an issued patent on a "a blocker device may comprise a mobile telephone, a portable computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a hardware-based authentication token such as an RSA SecurID.TM. token commercially available from RSA Security Inc..."

If one believes the hype of RFID and “The Internet of Things”, there will be an RFID chip in everything, and there will be RFID readers everywhere. In this scenario the RFID Guardian will be in almost constant warning mode forcing the user to turn it off to stop the incessant beeping.
Assuming that one can find a deserted highway, or such similar spot, free of RFID readers, and someone, armed with one, approached with the intention of stealing all your RFID data, and your RFID Guardian began to beep like crazy, how would you stop the RFID thief from stealing your data? You would have to fight him to the death and destroy his RFID reader. Not a very comforting solution for most of us.
A more useful device would be an RFID Jammer. This device, the size of a fountain pen, could act as a shield by emitting a constant RF jamming signal capable of preventing any RFID reader within a six foot radius from reading any of your RFID data. Now there is a device worth having.
