RFID Ecosystem project: Wireless Social Networking for you
Filed in archive Special Events on March 6, 2008
You must be very much aware of social networking but have you come across the term wireless social networking? If this seems interesting to you then you need to continue reading below. Social networking is now taking the next big step as volunteers from the computer science department of University of Washington have come together for a pilot where people and their items would be monitored in a closed environment and that too wirelessly.
From this month onwards all the people associated with the pilot will be wearing RFID tags on their clothing and belongings to keep a tab on them every five seconds within the department premises. The information collected will be saved in a database, used in various custom tools and published in web pages.
Dubbed as RFID Ecosystem Project it is being regarded as one of the biggest pilots aimed testing wireless tags in social settings. The aim of the pilot project is to test RFID tags in a social environment and find out how benefits could be derived from it. The study will try to search for the answer to questions related to privacy and utility and whether a balance could be achieved between the two or not. I was just wondering whether the results attained would be a real reflection of the technology or not. Let's wait and watch!!
