RFID can protect forest cover from depletion
Filed in archive Implementation on August 14, 2007
Forest cover worldwide has been depleting at a faster pace all due to the illegal tree felling activities which take place in connivance with the officials. Receding forest reserves is leading to several environmental problems such as global warming, floods and famines which is putting the entire existence of mankind into jeopardy. China has been a victim of such illegal lumbering activities and as a result is now left with just 16.5% land covered with forests.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation Malaysian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is making efforts towards embedding RFID chips in trees to curb illegal lumbering activities since most of these activities go undetected due to corruption and lack of manpower. Using this technology it will become easier to track illegal lumbering activities since the radio waves emitted by the timber will signal the officials when it passes the checkpoint. As a result it will become easier for the officials to nab the offenders and pinpoint the location where trees were cut. If everything goes well then all the people indulged in this unlawful activity will be put to task. All thanks to RFID which will let trees shout for justice and save the environment around us.
