RFID Can Empower Consumers

Filed in archive Privacy and Security by Anita Campbell on March 23, 2004

Ever since Philips's and Nokia's announcements about personal RFID readers, a number of great posts have appeared on the blogs pointing out how those devices may signal a switch in the balancelinks of power.

Personal RFID devices are seen as giving consumers power vis-a-vis retailers.

Up to now what we have mostly heard about is retailers using RFID for their own purposes. Many fear the invasion of personal privacy by retailers and others who are/might be able to track purchases after they are made.

However, with personal RFID readers, the balance may tip. Consumers will be able to do a better job comparison shopping. They will also have access to a wide variety of consumer-oriented services and conveniences.

Some people are still skeptical. But these new devices, when they are ready for prime time, open up possibilities that many of us are just beginning to glean.

For some of those possibilities, see my earlier post on Ubiquitous Computing and Smart Shopping.
