RFID can aid mobility challenged in crossing busy roads with ease
Filed in archive Implementation on August 28, 2007
Take this case. A few days back my friend Russell Shaw was crossing Mission Street which is one of the busiest roads. While he was crossing the road the green light had been set on a thirty second timer which was enough for him to move from north to south (after all he is quite young) but he noticed that a senior citizen was barely able to cross the road within the stipulated time all because of her old age.
All that he witnessed made him think that why couldn't RFID be applied for the benefit of all those who lacked agility. He comes up with an idea where bar code strips should be placed on the canes, walkers or clothing of people who are mobility challenged and RFID chips should be installed at the traffic signal so that they can pick up the signals when a person attempts to cross a signal and automatically increase the number of seconds in the light so that senior citizens or people with who are mobility challenged can cross the road with ease. Certainly it seems to be a good idea and I believe that RFID should certainly be put to use for the welfare of all.
