RFID becomes the heart of student's cell phones at Slippery Rock University
Filed in archive Near Field Communication on July 9, 2007
RFID has started penetrating the masses and now students will get a taste of RFID when during the month of August 8,500 RFID tags will be distributed for free to faculty and students at Slippery Rock University which can be attached to their respective cell phones. RFID is expected to make their lives easier as now they can pay for anything ranging from copier services to groceries at a touch of a button. Now there is no need for the students to carry their wallets along since RFID would do all the purchasing for them. Up till now students used to make purchases using photo ID cards which had a magnetic strip encoded with their user ID. These days you would surely find a cell phone in every student's pocket if not money and therefore the university decided that it would be a better option to embed this technology in the lives of the student so that their everyday purchases became easier.
These tags will be fixed on the inside cover of the battery compartment and when taken near merchant's sales terminal it will transmit an ID number linked to the Rock Dollar Account. The University is already in the process of signing merchants for this process. This will surely help in increasing the penetration of technology regarding which their seems to be an air of confusion all because of lack of knowledge but all this will be tackled when people start using it.

Hi there.
I'm a member of the editorial staff of http://www.newsrfid.com,
an italian newsboard about RFID world.
I gave the news of SRU's project on my site: I think it's a quite good news. It targets young people in an university environment: what could be a better test for RFID common use, even talking about security and privacy of stored data?
Hi everybody.

Hi guys,
I currently work on The RFID Forum 2.0 http://www.wazootech.com/rfid,
I have a very similar job like you Alessandro, its good to know other people that is in the subject.
I´ve also included this topic on the Forum as I found it really interesting. Recently I read that in Asia and United States they were implementing this technology to Sports. People could go with a special card with an rfid tag to the stadium and rfid readers specially positioned would charge you the ticket to an associate account related to your own ID. Also services like buying Hot Dogs in the stadium Or even a Coke would also be with the same system.
I think the previous story could be improved by the fact that your own cell phone has an RFID tag. Could we pay with our own cell phones the stadium tickets in the future? just like the Slippery Rock University Students?
