Radio Frequency Chips in Marathons
Filed in archive Sports by Anita Campbell on February 8, 2004
Whenever people talk about RFID, it's usually in the same breath with "inventory" or "supply chain."

Yet, one of the most interesting uses of radio frequency chips is in marathon races. Small RFID chips are embedded in the shoes of the racers to track their speed and progress.

Marathon races, due to their length, are notoriously difficult to track. Past years have seen some spectacular cheating scandals, with racers suddenly appearing near the finish line without having run the entire race.

Well, no more. RFID chips were used in the New York City Marathon in November 2003. And they will also be used in the upcoming Mumbai Marathon in India on February 15, 2004.

A German company, Mika Timing, developed the RFID system to be used.
