More Interest in Active RFID

Have you noticed more interest and attentionlinks on active RFID?

Most of the time when you read about RFID, it is passive RFID that is the topic. For a while, when all the attention seemed to be focused on Wal-Mart and similar retail mandates, it seemed like everyone just assumed passive RFID was the future.

But as this Telematics Journal article shows, there are times where only active RFID will do:
"In high-volume, high-velocity distribution environments, bar codes and passive RFID can only get you so far. When you are processing about 800 vehicles a day and your customer is demanding delivery of new vehicles to keep up with consumer demand, you can't afford to wait around and 'hope' your workers can fulfill the request."

The Broekman Group is deploying the WhereNet active RFID real-time locating system to keep track of 40,000 vehicles parked in their warehouse at the Port of Rotterdam. And they expect a one year return on investment.
