Lessons Learned From an RFID Implementation
Filed in archive Implementation on September 2, 2005

"The RFID project I managed was ultimately successful, but there were a few lessons I learned the hard way."
This is a quote from a guest opinion column published at RFID Journal this week. This is a helpful case study that any manager considering an RFID implementation should take the time to read.
The column is written by Buffy Dorpinghaus who was the IT project manager for implementing an RFID system to track computer assets in El Paso County, Colorado, USA. Some of the key lessons she learned and recommends:
- Define Your Processes First: Without clearly-defined processes, any data collection system will fail to bring benefits.
- Test, Test, Test: Equipment varies quite a bit, so take the time to test tags and readers to determine the brands that best meet your needs.
- Implement a Pilot Project First: Considering the evolving nature of the technology, doing a pilot project will help uncover and anticipate problems early enough to address them.
