Is RFID in the Supply Chain REALLY Stalled - What Do You Think?
Filed in archive Supply Chain on December 16, 2006
Do you agree with our guest blogger, Chris Kapsambelis, who says RFID in the supply chain is stalled? He says the technical challenges and the economics of implementing RFID are such, that barcodes are a better solution in the supply chain, than RFID tags.
He's taken a controversial position. While I don't agree with such a bleak outlook, I do think it is fair to say that near term there are challenges to sort out for using RFID in the supply chain. End users are still figuring out in many cases how to implement the technology.
However, I believe there are many examples of companies making progress with their RFID implementations. You have only to read the pages of the RFID Journal to read about new pilots and case studies all the time. It's just that things are going slower than many anticipated.
What is your opinion?

I think readers may find the results of one of the few pilot studies to be published on the web. Cardinal Health has it on their webpage below:

Pay close attention to their concept of unit-level “inference”. This not unlike the use of EDI and ASN with barcode. Also, notice that they recommend barcode as backup.
