Is It Feasible To Implant Migrant Workers?
Filed in archive Tags and Readers on June 1, 2006
Scott Silverman, the Chairman of the Board of VeriChip Corporation proposed in a national television that their RFID tracking tags could be implanted on immigrants and guest workers. This statement was made in response to Bush administration's call for identifying the people in their country and the reason for their presence. The chairman proposed that their RFID chips could be used for implanting workers registering at the border and then verifying their identities in the workplace.
Although it seems a good idea on the paper but whether it would be possible to implement this plan, it doesn't seems so. Firstly the privacy advocates would be raising a hue and cry, secondly proper infrastructure would be required which does not exist as of now and thirdly would there be enough funds available for implanting the 14 million migrant workers? Ok, even if they are successful in implanting the migrants can't they remove the chips? Think over it!!

Okay, so after migrants what's next? People with greencards? Muslims? Gays? Women? Where does it end?
It's a slippery slope that we should ne'er try to cross lest we discover that we all end up wearing the number of the beast and being surveiled by an all seeing blind quasi protectorate with a secret agenda of power and corruption that makes today's politics seem clean by comparison.
As someone writing about RFID, I expect you'd have enough common sense to see where this could lead and use your influence to shout out against such a use of this technology EVER.
