The popularity of RFID is set to achieve further heights as Intel has announced an all in one solution for RFID tag reader devices. This is a low cost compressed chip which is expected to bring down the cost of rfid readerslinks by more than half. As per the company the new Intel R1000 transceiver consolidates around ninety percent of the components in RFID reader onto a single chip. Measuring 8mm by 8mm in size it can be used for a number of applications so probably one could use the chip on handheld devices, loading dock doors, conveyor belts and host of other applications.

A lot of experts had stated that up till now the cost and complexity of RFID readers was a barrier in widespread adoption of this technology but this chip is expected to counter that problem even. The chip requires less energy therefore it is cost effective and easily manageable.

Supporting the EPCglobal Gen 2 standard RFID specification, the R1000 package comprises of a software development kit which can be deployed for simplification of programming readers. The chip is expected to retail for $40.

With one of the worlds largest chip companies supporting RFID it is expected that it would further the cause of RFID and ensure that it is adopted on a mass scale.
