India's retail sector takes a big step towards RFID with Reliance
Filed in archive Companies on December 24, 2007
If Reliance, India's largest and only private Fortune 500 company does something it's a big day for the whole country but what if it moves towards RFID? It's definitely a big news for all of us who are always keeping a watch on the latest happenings in the world of technology. After reading this post I believe the RFID industry would surely take the next flight to India since Reliance Retail, one of India's largest retailers and also a part of the humungous Reliance Group is testing RFID for implementation at its electronic and convenience stores coupled with its upcoming supermarkets and hypermarkets which could mean a huge business opportunity for the whole industry.
The company is confident that it can gain from RFID even though there are still a lot many logistics and operating challenges. It is looking forward to improve its efficiencies despite certain hurdles. Reliance brush with RFID is not new as way back in 1999 it had implemented what it referred to as India's first RFID based enterprise wide smart card system so it seems they may not face any Teething problems with respect to its implementation.
I believe one could gain a lot of business from this company which clocked $27 billion in sales in 2007 and aspires to be the Wal-Mart of India. Let's hope RFID helps it achieve its dreams and at the same time brings business for the RFID industry and strengthen the faith in it.
