Have You Been Hearing More About Smart Labels?

Filed in archive Tags and Readers by Anita Campbell on June 08, 2005

In the past 12 months have you been hearing the term "smart label" much more frequently? I certainly have.

The phrase has been in use longer than that, of course. But with RFID heating up it seems the interest in smart labels has heated up, too.

So I set out to get a better understanding of the capabilities of "smart labels." I ended up over at the Printronix website, where they have a good resource section with case studies and white papers.

This PDF paper from the Printronix site, "From Bar Codes To Smart Labels", gives an overview of smart labels. More importantly, it compares smart labels with other types of RFID tags used in supply chain settings. This chart encapsulates the main comparison points (click for larger image):

On a related note, remember that the Smart Labels USA conference is coming up later this month, June 27-30, 2005 in Baltimore, Maryland.
