Freikometer: Bike to School movement for the future of the country
Filed in archive Sports on August 12, 2008

My nephew has crossed the limits of obesity, courtesy the junk food he munches everyday and the sedentary lifestyle which has become a part of his living. I was searching for ways to get him back into shape and I came across Freikometer, a technology developed by Rob Nagler to make his boys pedal to school everyday.

Rob Nagler along with Tim Carlin mounted their Freikometer, a solar powered rider monitor at entrance of school lots. It was entrusted with the responsibility of recording bicycle trips with the aid of RFID tags attached to their helmets. The trip data used to automatically reach the system of Nagler who had announced prizes for children making maximum trips to school on their bicycles. With prizes including the likes of digital cameras and iPod Nano this has definitely encouraged a lot of students to chuck bus or car rides in favor of the healthier option. All this has been made possible by the non profit organization funded by Rob Nagler which is certainly an encouragement for several other parents to do the same.
Not only will this social movement shun obesity from the society but even save our environment by preventing the use of fuel driven vehicles. He has certainly laid down a vision which would go a long way towards helping the mankind.

I'm glad to see the emphasis in the story on both health for children improving by riding bikes to school as well as less car travel, hence improved environment.
With these kinds of changes, the area of safety around schools also seems to improve as there are fewer cars and more bikes!
Hats off to freiker.org and Nagler for implementing an outstanding program and realizing that positive reinforcement gets people off their behind!

Scary, scary stuff! How Orwellian can you get! What's to prevent registered sex offenders from demanding access to this information? How about those that choose not to participate, will they be blacklisted? What's next, toilets that analyze our children's waste so we can conform them to gov't approved healthy sustainable diets? Questions such as these should be answered before we surrender our freedoms on the altar of political & environmental correctness.
I'll stop my fear mongering now & go back to watching Glenn Beck.
