Forget Your Wallet, RFID Mobile Phones Are Coming Soon
Filed in archive Near Field Communication on November 23, 2006
If this is true then I would have to quit my wallet pretty soon. Expect your cell phone to become a digital wallet in the near future. Cell phone operators have recently come to an agreement for expanding NFC or Near Field Communications. A technology similar to RFID it would be offering true mobility to devices which you use and would work only when brought within touching distance.
So now your cell phone would act as your movie tickets, car keys, credit cards and probably a host of other options. This is how it would function. A tag would be embedded inside your cell phone which would store and transmit all data wirelessly and a reader which would be able to read the data. Next time you would feel like watching a movie you could just pick up your phone and buy one and when you reach the hall you will be granted access when the reader confirms the details of the tickets on the tag inside the phone.
I will not even think a split second before going for these phones because I am fed up of carrying cash, cards, keys etc and I hope you also feel the same. I think the time has come to say goodbye to your wallets.

Although there are lingering concerns by privacy advocates over the use of RFID, there's no doubt that the use of RFID tags continues to increase. According to a new report from In-Stat, over 1 billion tags were produced last year, and by 2010, that total will rise to 33 billion. Wal-Mart's requiring of their suppliers to use RFID tags are certainly one reason for the projected growth, as well as potential applications in both the industrial and retail sectors, such as the tracking of inventory.
