End Disc Piracy with RFID
Filed in archive Implementation on September 17, 2006
Now using pirated discs would be a thing of the past. U-Tech, a subsidiary of world's largest DVD discs producer, Ritek is in the process of developing an RFID chip which would curtail piracy of music and movies. RFID would also be used for HD-DVD and Blu Ray discs which would enable movie studios to remotely track discs as they move from manufacturing units to retail shelves and finally in the hands of the consumers.
Drives and disc players would also not remain aloof as whenever you would insert a pirated disc in the player the RFID reader would check whether or not it is an original disc but let me tell you one thing that with this you would also not be able to make backups of your important discs.
Certainly it seems to be a very good idea to counter piracy but I believe that until and unless the mindset of the people involved in dealing and using of disc is not changed and they realize that by purchasing pirated discs they are not saving a few bucks rather they are killing the living of thousands of people, till then no technology would be potent enough to deal with this menace.

I do not think that disc piracy will ever end. This would be ideal both for companies and customers but unfortunately, there is no end for this phenomenon.
