Deutsche Post World Net to Go Green with RFID
Filed in archive Companies on December 26, 2006
Up till now Deutsche Post World Net or DPWN was using paper labels on its containers mentioning details regarding it but the company realized that it was throwing away around million paper labels each year and though it was a cheaper option but it was putting a lot of pressure on the environment by generating waste and mind you also disturbing the ecological balance as hundred of trees were being cut in order to generate those paper labels.
Realizing their social responsibility, the company has decided to use passive RFID tags instead of paper labels on these containers. Dubbed as D-RFID tags they would be responsible for keeping an eye on the six million yellow shipping containers of the company. For this purpose DPWN has undertaken a project called Pariflex in order to test these tags.
Since these tag would be subjected to harsh conditions, they would be required to have an effective display and most importantly last for a longer period of time if they would have to make some economic sense. The tests are expected to finish by 2008 so lets hope everything turns out to be fine.
It is a very humble step from the company to make an effort towards protecting the environment which is reeling under intense pressure from the human population. RFID is also expected to save the lives of hundreds of trees which are cut each year to meet our paper needs. This should serve as a very good example for other companies and also do good to the RFID industry.
