Cyber Concrete Can Prevent Earthquake Damages
Filed in archive Implementation on December 18, 2006
Have you ever seen an area after being hit by a massive earthquake? Ever seen the building structures fall like a pack of cards with hundreds of bodies trapped inside them for days. This could have been prevented to quite an extent if the foundations of the buildings were strong enough but generally it's not the case and finally the result is innumerable deaths and destructions.
In order to deal with this concrete embedded RFID tags have been developed by Sumitomo Osaka Cement and YRP Ubiquitous Networking Laboratory. These specially designed tags have a storage capacity which is more when compared with ordinary IC tags and when the reader is brought near the concrete it retrieves the data and converts it into spoken form. Till now we had heard about walls with ears but they even have mouths is a new revelation.
These tags can reveal all the information regarding the quality and strength of the structure and hence give a peace of mind to the inmates. Cyber concrete will be a boon to the people of Japan after Tokyo was shook not by another earthquake but a scandal where quake resistance data for a number of buildings was found out to be false and this news had sent shivers down the spine of people of Japan where earthquake is a common occurrence but now they need not worry as they can get their questions answered directly from the wall which would obviously speak the truth.
Innumerable lives could be saved if cyber concrete is used in construction of materials and RFID has again played a central role in this. What do you say?

The technology regarding concrete is increasing daily. New uses are becoming popular inside as well as outside the home. Earthquake prone areas should look into concrete technology more than ever to help to reduce the damages caused by the quakes.

The earthquake resistance of a building doesn't only depends of the foundation, there a lot more things to consider. New construction techniques are developed to meet the the strongest natural challenges and in some areas on the planet the results are amazing. It will take time but I think things are on a good trend in construction industry.
