Car2go vehicle sharing service: As easy as using your cell phone

Daimler, one of the biggest luxury car and car parts makers states that from now on renting cars would be as easy as using a cell phone. The company has launched car2go which is a car sharing service comprising of a fleet of Smart Fourtwos.

This is how the car sharing service would work. You will have to sign up for the service after which electronic tags will be applied to your driving license and you could either book your car online or get into an unreserved vehicle by touching the tagged license to the sensor on the vehicle. After entering the car you will need to enter the PIN number to access keys of the car from the glove apartment.

This car renting service is based on per minute pricing basis where a user will have to pay 19 cents per minute for using the car. The good thing is you won't have to pay any form of joining fee and once you are through with your driving expedition you simply need to park the vehicle at any of the authorized parking spots within city limits and swipe your license again to end the service. Sounds really simple and cool but you will have to wait till the spring of 2009 to avail this service as it's still in the pilot phase and will only be available in Ulm as of now.
