RFID Basics
by Anita Campbell on December 14, 2004
I keep getting reminded through reader emails and questions that manage to pop up even on my other (non-RFID) blog, that many business people are just starting to educate themselves about RFID. They are just beginning their knowledge quest.
So the question of Bar codes vs. RFID tags is still a timely question for many.
This Industry Week article has a handy side-by-side chart comparing the benefits of bar codes vs RFID tags.
The author suggests that bar codes may be superior to RFID for certain purposes, or sometimes used in conjunction with RFID tags.
It is definitely worth a read.

Be sure to check out January 2005 issue of "Software Development". It is loaded with RFID primers and articles about RFID middleware.

In my experience many aren't that confused by RFID so much as they're confused by the differences between EPCs, the EPC Network and the existing EAN-UCC identifiers. For the non-CPG/non-supply-chain RFID use cases there really is no deployed infrastructure that makes bar codes more competitive than RFID. But within the supply chain realm there are large installed bases of bar code based applications that create the apparent "competition".
What needs to happen is a better education campaign about the fact that RFID and barcoding aren't competitive so much as cooperative. Both will store the same information and will coexist because of the different advantages that both have.

I can bet the bar codes will succeed in the long run. Watch my post in a few years...
