Another Hat Tip on ZigBee and Active RFID Tags
Filed in archive Wireless on May 24, 2006
Gautam, my co-editor here at the RFID Weblog, on Monday wrote about active RFID tags for cattle, combined with a ZigBee network, versus passive RFID tags. (Recall I wrote back in February that we would be hearing more about ZigBee networks and RFID.)
I think the approach outlined is an interesting one, and is but one more example of how active tags are experiencing a resurgence of interest, after seeming to fall out of favor for a while in some camps. And ZigBee networks are proving to be an interesting approach to picking up the signal from active tags.
I wanted to cite the underlying news article that Gautam wrote about, and also give a hat tip to blogger David Francis, who had sent the news item to me.
As happens occasionally, either Gautam or I may receive a news tip and the other is not aware of it. Gautam and I work on different hemispheres of the globe (he is in India and I am in the Midwest United States). Other than maintaining a regular posting schedule of assigned days and exchanging the intermittent email now and then, we work independently. Often we do not know what the other is writing about until it is published.
In this case, David sent the tip to me directly since he and I have corresponded through email on other matters (thank you David!). Meanwhile, Gautam independently found another source for the item.
Keep those tips coming. We enjoy receiving them.
